Missed Your Connecting Flight?
Under EU law, you may be entitled to compensation of up to €600.
What does it mean to miss a connection?
You miss a connection when, due to the delay or cancellation of a previous flight, you are unable to catch your next flight as part of the same journey.
How can you avoid missing a connection?
To reduce the risk, consider these tips:
Allow enough time between flights, especially if you have to go through customs or security checks.
Check your flight status in advance – you can use the airline’s app or the airport’s website.
Choose flights with longer layovers.
What are your rights if you miss a connection?
If your flight was within the European Union or had a layover at a European airport, EU Regulation 261 entitles you to certain rights. You may receive:
Up to €600 in compensation, depending on distance and delay;
Free meals and drinks (if the wait is over 2 hours);
Hotel accommodation (if the delay is overnight);
Alternative transport to your final destination.
What to do immediately after missing a connection:
Get information. Ask airport staff or the crew why the flight was delayed and take note of the reason.
Keep all documents: tickets, boarding passes, and receipts for any extra expenses (transport, accommodation, etc.). These will be helpful when filing a claim.
When are you entitled to compensation?
You can claim compensation if:
The aircraft had a minor technical issue;
You arrived at your final destination with a delay of over 3 hours;
The delay wasn’t clearly explained or was caused by the airline.
When are you NOT entitled to compensation?
You won’t receive compensation if:
The delay was due to severe weather or air traffic control issues (extraordinary circumstances);
You didn’t have the required documents or didn’t arrive at the gate on time.
How much compensation can you receive?
The compensation amount depends on the flight distance:
Short flights (under 1,500 km) – €250
Medium flights (1,500–3,500 km) – €400
Long flights (over 3,500 km) – €600
Other benefits you are entitled to:
Airlines must provide:
Free meals and drinks;
Hotel accommodation (if needed);
Transport between the hotel and the airport;
Two free phone calls, faxes, or emails.
If your delay is 5 hours or more, you can request a refund of your ticket or a return flight to your point of departure.

In the U.S., airlines are not legally required to compensate passengers for missed connections. However, some may voluntarily offer meals, accommodation, or vouchers.
